Van der Valk A4 Schiphol automates floor cleaning with Cobi 18

Van der Valk A4 Schiphol did not sit still during the lockdowns

One of the largest hotels in the Netherlands is located on the A4 near Schiphol; Van der Valk A4 Schiphol made clever use of the COVID lockdowns; the hotel worked on its capacity and modernized its event spaces, restaurants, and brasserie. “I couldn’t look at a drill anymore,” says Bill van der Valk, the hotel’s young director. The finishing touches are still being put on the enormous complex. With all these expansions comes an additional challenge: personnel. The hotel is attracting new employees internationally to meet the demand.

Smart solutions are also being rolled out, such as an automatic check-in counter and cleaning robots. “Smart solutions like these help us free up time for what really matters: attention to the guests.”

Cobi 18 scrubbing robots help with the daily cleaning of floors

“Cleaning the floors with so many guests and event visitors requires a lot of attention; multiple cleaning rounds per day ensure a clean but also safe floor. These tasks can easily be taken over by Cobi 18, the autonomous scrubber-dryer from ICE; that saves us a lot of time!” says Bill.

How does Cobi work?

At the end of an event, Cobi 18 takes care of cleaning all hard floors. If there are still some small remnants of dirt, that is no problem because this fully automatic scrubber-dryer also immediately picks up small sweeping debris during wet cleaning. Cobi 18 can be pre-programmed for the desired time so that no one has to physically press the “start button.”

Cobi works with a so-called QR Home Location Code as a starting and ending point. Up to 6 routes can be programmed on each of these HLCs. No laptop is required for this. “Cobi works according to the ‘teach & repeat’ principle, and that is exactly why Cobi is so easy to use. The machine reads the code, you choose an ‘Auto-fill or Copy Cat’ mode, and you show Cobi which area it needs to clean.” After the route is learned, the Cobot executes the route, multiple times if desired. Additionally, the AI (artificial intelligence) ensures that the machine recognizes and avoids obstacles, even in very dynamic areas. Cobi doesn’t skip a thing!

Consistent cleaning, even during opening hours

Cobi can be deployed multiple times a day, and that is naturally a win for cleanliness! Previously, mechanical cleaning was done once a day, but with the deployment of Cobi, the Van der Valk team can choose when and how often per day cleaning takes place. “And that is, of course, ideal in changing weather conditions,” Bill indicates. “In rainy or wintry weather, Cobi can perform extra rounds so that the floor is well-maintained, which reduces the risk of slipping and provides a clean appearance. Moreover, Cobi doesn’t get sick or become less accurate,” he says with a wink. Guests are no longer entirely surprised by it. Cobots are also used for other applications in the hospitality industry, but of course, innovations like scrubbing cobots are interesting and cool, and therefore fun to see!
